Residents in the area have been urged to go to their safe space now and those downstream of the storm were told to stay aware and have a plan in place for when it passes over.

A tornado watch is in effect for the Dallas-Fort Worth area until 8pm and a warning has been has been issued for portions of Coryell and Bell counties.

The National Weather Service for Fort Worth told residents the strong rotation would be difficult to see because it was completely rain-wrapped.

It wrote: 'Tornado warning with strong rotation continues for portions of Coryell and Bell counties.

'Make sure to be in your safe space!

'Be in your safe space now if you are in the warning box! Those downstream of the warning need to stay weather aware and have a plan in place!'

There have been no immediate reports of damage or injuries as a result of the storm.

Social media posts also showed large hail that had fallen along with the rain and wind in the area.

The service later provided an update to say the rotation had diminished but to continue to stay aware.

Destructive winds and hail larger than baseballs could rain down in some areas as the tornado passes through.

The counties included in the tornado watch are Bell, Bosque, Comanche, Coryell, Falls, Freestone, Hamilton, Hill, Lampasas, Leon, Limestone, McLennan, Milam, Mills and Robertson.
