He's been sporting his extreme hairstyle for quite a while now.

But Shia LaBeouf has taken his unique look to another level, shaving the sides of his head to further emphasise his mohawk and rat-tail.

The Transformers actor went along to his gym followed by a trip to the hair salon in Los Angeles on Tuesday, where he emerged with his fresh new appearance.

The 28-year-old previously had a shorter mop of hair but over recent months has grown it out and added to it with the longer hairpiece, which he frequently styles in a long plait.

Earlier in the day, he had showed off his rather bulky muscles in a tight-fitting and slightly tatty red t-shirt as he made his way to yet another workout.

And just a few hours later, the sides of his hair had been removed.

As well as his intriguing head of hair, Shia had also shaved off most of his facial fuzz - he was spotted just hours before with a far heavier beard.

The Transformers actor looked carefree as he strolled through West Hollywood, finishing off his daytime look with a heart stud earring in one lobe, as well as his relatively new eyebrow piercing.

It seems his unusual look is here to stay: the troubled actor first revealed his new image a couple of months ago.

And, after being offered $10,000 by a pest control company to chop off his unsightly rat-tail, the look remains.

In March, Terminix referred to Shia's hairstyle on its Facebook page along with a graphic of the back of a head with a rat on it and the rat's tail going down the back of the person's head.

However, the actor - who is currently dating his Nymphomaniac co-star Mia Goth - seemed completely unfazed by the campaign.

The couple are usually inseparable, after having been an item since 2013, but Shia made a rare solo appearance out in Hollywood on Tuesday.

Meanwhile Shia will star in Man Down, in the lead role of former U.S. Marine Gabriel Drummer who seeks out his son, accompanied by his best friend and a survivor, in a post-apocalyptic America.

Kate Mara and Gary Oldman co-star in the war thriller, which will be released on October 30.
