Barnes was born on December 1, 1986, in Milwaukee, the son of a public school teacher and a United Auto Workers member. His father’s name is Jesse, and his middle name, Mandela, is a tribute to anti-apartheid activist and South Africa’s first black president, Nelson Mandela.
